Hat Progress

by The Spinning Guy

I’m making progress on my crochet hat. I’d show you, but the camera is still unavailable due to the move.

The pattern I’m using is a top-down double-crochet with front post ribs crocheted in a circle. To start the brim, I use seven rows of single crochet. Then, I reverse direction and do seven rows of front stitch only single crochet in spiral followed by single crochet in spiral to size. The front loop only crochet allows the fold brim to turn naturally. Reversing directions keeps the right side of the crochet out when the brim is folded up.

It’s a nice pattern and I work it to size rather than working to any specific number of stitches. Originally, it was a bottom-up hat I found on the internet, but I had numerous problems with the starting chain being too tight over the ears, so I inverted the pattern and added my own variations.

Another variation I have tried is to create a non-folding brim, or a brim crocheted at right angles to the rest of the hat. I’ve done the latter bottom up and top down. The basic pattern is so flexible they all work.

I’ll show you the pictures when the camera is once again available.

I’m still thinking a nice lacy scarf with a fancy crochet pattern is my next project with this same yarn, although I might get bold and give knit socks another try.
